But i've also read about the bad condition of the beaches and the boardwalk amongst other things.
How good is a beach town, when the beach isnt so good. Ponta Negra is not the only beach of Natal. There are almost hundred beaches close to the city and a bunch of lagoons. Ponta Negra is not that bad IMO. I had a house close to Genipabu and a Volkswagen with big tires I used to explore other places. My wife still goes to Natal once in a while she was born there to visit her relatives.
They felt comfortable there. It is when the rainy season starts on the north east. It can comes heavy short rain and a hot sun when there are no clouds. Ponta Negra is nice but has faced some problems related to prostitution and infra-structure by the beach as the city has witnessed a certain crisis regarding its mayors amid corruption rumors.
Ponta Negra is a great option to stay as its very easy to move around, by public buses, taxis, excursions. Its the centre of tourism in Natal. Prostitutes have moved away from the beach front to other places. Action daytime and nighttime. If you would stay in Baia Formosa I consider it as the end of the world, just beach, nothing else to do , would get boared after 1 day. In Ponta Negra you'll find all kind of accomodation, from youth hostel over private rentals stay with families via airbnb and wimdu and similar sites til 5 star hotel.
There are construction works underway at the moment I do live near Ponta Negra to make the beachfront even more beautiful for the World Cup improving infrastructure , Avoid staying in or near P.
